I’m Mary Roberts, a reading teacher and dyslexia therapist trained in the Orton-Gillingham method with more than twenty years of experience as a classroom teacher, special education leader, reading interventionist, and instructional coach.
After witnessing first-hand too many students arriving at my 7th-grade English classroom lacking fundamental reading skills and unable to sound out new words over the course of over 20 years in the classroom, I felt I needed to be part of the solution. I decided to train in the Orton-Gillingham reading method—an approach to reading instruction that benefits all learners but is particularly useful to children with dyslexia—through the prestigious Orton-Gillingham Academy.
I have also been trained in the Wilson Reading System, a Tier 3 Structured Literacy program based on phonological coding research and Orton-Gillingham principles. I now work directly with struggling readers on fundamental reading and spelling skills, offering young learners the tools they need to flourish academically and in life.
I earned a Masters of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education with a concentration in teaching English. I hold English teaching credentials in New York, Massachusetts, and California, as well as special education credentials in New York and California with concentrations in English, social studies, and general science.
During my years as a classroom educator, I taught English, social studies, science, and math to learners of all ages, specifically students with individualized education plans (IEPs) who required personalized support. I have also served as an instructional coach and director of learning support, during which time I supported a team of teachers and paraprofessionals, and served as chairperson for the Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings.
I live on Long Island with my husband and daughter. As a lifelong educator, I am committed to providing all children with access to high-quality resources that build literacy and life skills so that every learner can thrive. I am excited to leverage all I’ve learned to serve as a lifeline for families and children who need a trusted guide on their side.
